Research

Conducting research is only the beginning.

As the state's only R1 classified research University, we take research seriously. With $114 million in research expenditures, at WVU Health Sciences, we're leading discovery in neuroscience, cancer, heart and vascular, oral care, substance use disorder, population health and more to help solve our state's health challenges. As an R1-designated research institution, we are among an elite group of schools across the country.

Leading Discovery

Improving lives by pioneering advances in brain health — our Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute completed the world’s first clinical trial to investigate the use of focused ultrasound technology to treat opioid use disorder.

Inspired by Our State

West Virginia is a microcosm of the United States. A state facing the same challenges as the rest of the country, and home to some of the brightest, hardest-working people dedicated to solving them. At WVU, this mission fuels everything we do, especially when it comes to addressing the health issues affecting West Virginians.

From developing alternative treatments that reduce opioid dependence, to improving nurse-patient communication, to supporting tobacco cessation in communities, we're tackling the state's most pressing health concerns through innovation, research and care.

Students Making a Difference

More than 15% of West Virginians suffer from diabetes, with countless undiagnosed. Quincy Hathaway's research examines the effect diabetes can have on the heart in the hopes of producing better treatments.
